I had a great Mother's Day, full of pampering and hugs and kisses.
I mostly thought of all the great moms in my life though and thought of ways that I could be a better mom. Right now I am listening to my kids play in the back ground and thinking what a great joy it is to be a mom and especially one who is blessed with a husband who makes it possible for me to stay home with them. But I have to admit that this is not always how I feel.
I often have moments of great impatience. I find myself questioning why I would be so crazy as to think I was capable of this. Days where I find myself hiding in the bathroom with an oatmeal cream pie. It is these moments that I wish I could take back. These are the things I thought about as I listened to the talks in church on Sunday. These are the things I need to work on. Even though the world would claim that this is normal and every mother has these moments, it does not mean that I should not try to change them. The reason for this earthly life is to become more like Christ. To learn his patience. To have his charitable heart and to be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice.
So this Mother's Day I am starting a new tradition. Instead of just having New Year's resolutions, I am going to start having a Mother's Day resolution. Each year after the day of pampering and praise is over I am going to think of one thing I need to work on as a Mother and try each day till the next Mother's Day to do become a better mother or at least my resolution. I think this year I will start with something that me and my husband both wish there was less of in our own homes growing up, yelling when we are upset. I am going to try to use softer tones with my family and not let my voice get to loud when correcting their innocent mistakes. Hopefully next year I will be able to look back at this entry and feel like I really deserve all the love and pampering from my husband and kids.
I would also like to praise the mom's in my life. My grandmother's who always made us feel like each of us was their favorite. My Mom who has always been there to answer late night phone calls. My mother-in-law, who has always been available to babysit when I needed a break. And last but not least my sister who is one of the Mom's I admire the most. She always seems to know exactly how I am feeling. And surprisingly is usually struggling with the same things with her kiddos at the same time. She always gives me a different perspective to think about and most of the time I am able to apply it to my life. Her children are smart and beautiful and creative. Because of her they are growing into children who are sensitive and loving. They are learning the gospel and trying their hardest to live righteously. She may not have the most traditional style of mothering , but it works for her and it works for her family and I am so proud of the Mom she has become.
I am grateful for all the Mother's in my life and hope I can resolve to be more like each one of them in little ways each day.
